Book Inspiration

Fruits

Fruits is a famous street style magazine from Tokyo. This book is a collection of shots from the pages of the magazine, written in English for the western world. The photos are from the 1990's but they are still relevant and inspiring images today for people in the west. However people in Japan look at it and see old, ugly styles that are embarrassing. It's actually funny, one of my best friends in Japan, Maya, is in this book. As the book isn't sold in Japan she only found out when she saw it in a book shop in the USA. However she is really embarrassed as the photo is of her old look, which was called "decora" and very popular in the 90's, which basically meant decorating yourself with lots of things like toys, wigs, badges, blow up guitars, basically anything. Her new style is called "Spank!" which is all about pink nostalgic 1980's styles.

Style Deficit Disorder: Harajuku Street Fashion

The photos in this book were actually taken by my best friend and housemate in Tokyo, Gallermic. You may see the same people in my book, that's because we were at the same parties, often standing right next to each other taking photos! The book is written by an acquaintance of mine from when I lived in Tokyo. I can't believe all my friends are in a book, its so crazy. None of my Australian friends have had books written about them (yet) so it makes me want to go back to Tokyo ASAP and become famous.

I am obviously interested in fashion, in particular street and party fashion. I get more inspired by seeing what people really wear than what a designer can come up with in their atelier. I wanted to create a book that would maybe inspire people in Melbourne to be more adventurous with their clothes and to maybe wear some colour for a change.

Week 8

Stress levels are rising. 4 weeks left to make 1 website and 1 book on 2 programs I am very, very unfamiliar with. I have lots of ideas but have no idea how to actually put them into practice.

Current idea for publication:

TOKYO STYLE TRAVEL GUIDE
The complete guide to the hottest shops, cafes and hang outs.
Includes maps, photos, party guide and Tokyo street fashion trend guide.

Maybe make it a calender because that would be easier.

Website:
Portfolio of my art, designs, video art.

Week 4 (My first class)

I am joining this class in week 4 as it has taken a while to work out my subjects as I am getting recognition for prior learning so I can finish my degree in 2 years. I studied fine art photography at The VCA in 2003, and quit after 1.5 years due to my youth. I don't regret quitting as I have had an amazing few years of traveling and living in Tokyo, Japan.

I am in the new Creative Arts and industries course and its my 1st year at VU (I am in 2nd year subjects though). It seems that this class is full of 3rd year CMA students who actually have a huge folio of work to make into a publication and a website. I really haven't got much stuff to showcase right now. I'll have to go and dig out some things...

My Ideas for the publication:

Tokyo through my eyes:

Tokyo subculture and fashion book or calendar:
